Full itinerary below**
Day One - Lima
Today your Peruvian adventure begins in the coastal capital city of Lima, arriving at any time before the welcome meeting officially kickstarts proceedings this evening. If you'd like to explore more of Lima, we can arrange pre-tour accommodation for you. Plus, if you'd like to do the optional Peru Culinary bundle (at additional cost), then pre-tour accommodation is a must, as the cookery class begins this morning!
Day Two - Cusco
You'll fly to Cusco, the famed gateway to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, today. Upon arrival in Cusco, you'll have the rest of the day at leisure to relax or explore as you please. The city is famous for its mix of Spanish colonial architecture and Inca ruins, as it's played a significant role in both the Inca and Spanish Empires. The second part of the optional Peru Culinary Bundle takes place today in Cusco, visiting the San Pedro market in search of local ingredients, before being shown how to prepare typical Peruvian cuisine, and enjoying the fruits of your labour!
Day Three - Ollantaytambo
A full day of exploration awaits, with a guided tour of the Sacred Valley and the Ollantaytambo ruins, touring the town and fortress of Ollantaytambo with a local guide, stepping back in time at this Inca archaeological site, which still shows signs of its former glory. You'll learn how the area was an important stronghold during warfare between the Spanish and the Incas, and admire the agricultural terraces, a Temple Hill, and storehouses which can still be seen. You'll also explore the hilltop citadel of Pisac, an Incan ceremonial centre, and winding agricultural terracing that's still in use today. Sitting amid sweeping green valleys and mountain peaks, Pisac is a truly captivating site, and you'll have time to explore the back of the site to see a pocketed cliff across Kitamayo Gorge, which once contained hundreds of Inca tombs. As you travel through the stunning Sacred Valley of the Incas, you'll also visit a women's weaving co-op, meeting the women and learning about traditional weaving and dying, as well as enjoying a delicious lunch at the Parwa community restaurant, a successful farm-to-table programme that helps support the local economy, with all proceeds going directly back to the remote community. Both the co-op and the community restaurant are sustainable tourism projects supported and kickstarted by G Adventures, as part of their aim to produce change by travel.
Day Four - Aguas Calientes
Today you'll board a train that winds through the spectacular Urubamba Valley to the village of Aguas Calientes, nestled in the hills beneath Machu Picchu. After enjoying your scenic journey, visit the local hot springs which give the town its name. Alternatively, this trip offers the opportunity to join the 1-day Inca Trail Hike (at an additional cost), getting off the train at 104km to hike just over 9 miles through cloud forests and ascending into the mountains, past the archaeological sites of Wiñay Wayna and Inti Pata, until you reach the famed Sun Gate in the late afternoon, enjoying some time to explore Machu Picchu today. Afterwards, you'll rejoin the group in Aguas Calientes by bus, so be sure to make the most of the hot springs this evening to soothe any aching muscles!
Day Five - Machu Picchu
Setting off early to make the most of the best time to visit the iconic Machu Picchu, today your local guide will show you around the 'Lost City of the Incas', gaining local insight into the Inti Mach'ay Cave, Inti Watana, the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Water, the Temple of the Condor, and the Room of the Three Windows. Taking the bus to Machu Picchu, you'll take in an unforgettable sun rise at one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, and have some time to explore a little on your own after your guided tour. If you're feeling up to it, hike to visit the nearby Inca Bridge, thought by some to be a secret back entrance to Machu Picchu. As you trek to the bridge, which cleaves to a 1,900ft cliff, you'll be able to take in some amazing views of cloud forest along the way. Later, you'll take the train back to Ollantaytambo to be met by private vehicle and head back to Cusco.
Day Six - Cusco
Back in Cusco today, you have a free day to make the most of all the many things to see and do in this vibrant city. Optional activities you may like to join include horseback riding, whitewater rafting, or mountain biking, or perhaps you'd prefer to visit the Museo Inka, Museo de Historia Regional, or simply just relax!
Days Seven and Eight - Tambopata
Having experienced historic cities and Inca ruins high up in the Andes, it's time to experience a very different side to Peru as you fly to Puerto Maldonado, deep in the lowlands of the Amazon Jungle. You'll continue by motorized boat to your comfortable and intimate Amazon Lodge, spotting bird species en route - the Tambopata Rainforest area holds the world record for the most bird sightings in one area, so bird lovers are in for a treat here! During your two-night stay here, you'll enjoy plenty of opportunities to search for wildlife, including a wildlife-spotting night walk on day seven, jungle excursions guided by expert naturalist guides - who can teach you about traditional and medicinal uses of plants - and a caiman-spotting cruise after dark on day eight.
Days Nine and Ten - Lima
Fuel up with a delicious Amazonian breakfast before taking the motorized boat and van back to the airport for your flight to Lima, where tonight you might wish to join an optional final dinner and night out with Pisco Sours, before your tour concludes after breakfast on day ten.
