Vast desert landscapes, palm tree oases, springtime flowers bursting colour across arid hills, canyons flowing with seasonal water, awe-inspiring ancient monuments, fantastic nature reserves – it’s easy to see why Jordan fascinated T.E. Lawrence, famously nicknamed Lawrence of Arabia. With UNESCO World Heritage sites, welcoming, friendly towns and seaside resorts, Jordan is still a popular destination today. Jordan has a rich history which has seen Nabataean tradesmen, Roman legionnaires, Muslim armies and zealous Crusaders each leaving their mark; admire Roman amphitheatres, crusader castles and Christian mosaics, and most notably the iconic archaeological site of Petra, once the Nabatean capital, the ‘Rose City’ can be found in a narrow valley strewn with tombs, temples and monuments carved into the surrounding pink sandstone cliffs. As well as the manifold historical treasures to be discovered, the Dead Sea (complete with salt and mud spa packages), fantastic SCUBA diving at Aqaba, and sunset camel rides or 4x4 desert safaris at Wadi Rum can be enjoyed.
