Ever wanted to take a cruise on your own but you’re just not convinced? Well we have put together our top 10 tips for solo cruisers and single travellers and shared them with you below.
These helpful tips will help you learn how to make your solo cruise trip even better than what you expected.
Many cruise lines offer themed cruises around the world throughout the year. Take a 70’s or 80’s themed cruise if you’re a music lover or a wine themed cruise if you think yourself a bit of a wine connoisseur. This is just a very small selection of themed cruises available and whichever themed cruise you decide to take, you will definitely have lots of fun exploring your interests as a solo cruiser.
Just because you have decided to take the plunge and cruise alone, it doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t make any friends on your journey. Most cruisers are very friendly people and will take you under their wing from the second you step onboard and a lot of cruisers, whether they are single or solo cruisers, or with their partners or friends, actually go on a cruise to make more friends. Request with your maître d’ to be sat at a large table for dinner, attend lots of parties and join in with lots of activities onboard and we guarantee you will have met at least one new friend by the end of your first day. You can also approach your cruise director and let them know you are cruising solo and want to meet other solo cruisers – they will point you in the right direction. Some cruise lines will hold single or solo get togethers for the solo cruisers to get to meet other travellers.
Once ashore, you don’t have to explore alone, unless you want to of course. Taking part in the cruise lines shore excursions is a great way to meet new people and the perfect way to explore the sounds and sights of your destination. Taking a cruise line shore excursion will also save you the planning of your days ashore so you can just sit back and enjoy the ride.
You have obviously decided to take a holiday as you are in need of some much well deserved R&R so why not take a day out of one of your sea days and spend the day in the spa? Indulge yourself with luxurious treatments such as a massage, a facial or even a make-over. You will come back from your holiday definitely looking refreshed and your family & friends will be wondering what you were worried about.
No matter what cruise line you go on there will be some sort of activity where you will be able to learn something new and something you wouldn’t normally think of in your day to day life. Take a professional cooking class, learn how to paint or even if you do not want to participate in a class then take to the library and bury your head in one of the many books available. Then show off to your friends back home all your new found knowledge.
If you want to chat with other passengers on your cruise before you go, then join a forum and get chatting, look at Cruise Critic for example, where you can connect with other singles and solo cruisers. Why not join the forum, pop on there the cruise you are going on and see if anyone else is going to be on the same cruise as you. They may be able to give you tips and advice before you travel or even agree to meet with you in the terminal or meet up with you once onboard.
If you meet new people onboard and would like to stay in touch with them during your cruise, give them a card with your name and room number on (or take down their details). This way, if you are on a bigger ship and may not bump into them again you can always make sure you stay in contact.

Most cruise lines tend to hold a meet & greet service on the first or second day of the cruise for solo cruisers but you probably will find other cruisers that are not on their own will still attend as well to meet new people. Check your cruise news in your cabin for more information on where your meet and greet will be held.
The best thing about cruising on your own is you can do what you want, when you want. You get the cabin all to yourself. So if you want to watch TV at 2am, do it. And just think you won’t have to put up with your room mate snoring as you won’t have one! If you make the ‘wrong friend’ decision at the beginning of a cruise, ditch them. If the ship is big enough, you probably won’t see them again. Get up when you want, join in with whatever you want to and speak to whoever you like. Make the most of your me time and enjoy your solo cruise.
Have we convinced you then? Feel a solo cruise really could be for you? Take the plunge (not literally) and book up your solo cruise experience today with one of our cruise experts on 01234 326 758. We guarantee you will not be disappointed!
